A robbery or attempted robbery at home doesn't necessarily mean your home security needs an overhaul. But it definitely needs to be assessed. Perhaps the thieves managed to break into your home, or perhaps they were unsuccessful. Should you consider replacing all the locks on your doors and windows?

The Point of Entry

It's likely that you'll contact the police, and a formal police report may be a requirement for any insurance claim. When thieves successfully break into your home, you may wish to ask the officer where they gained entry—if it's not already obvious. Is the door or window in question particularly vulnerable? Would it benefit from extra reinforcement or other modifications?

A Careful Inspection

Even when the point of entry has been identified, all doors and windows must be carefully inspected. The successful point of entry may not have been the first attempt. Check the door and window locks for signs of damage and tampering. Locate the key for each lock and ensure that each one remains functional.

The Bypassed Lock

The door lock that was bypassed and permitted entry will need to be replaced. Call a locksmith for immediate assistance, and use their emergency service if needed. The door lock in question needs to be replaced immediately. Even if it was merely picked and appears to have remained intact, its ongoing security cannot be assured. Some techniques for bypassing a lock, such as lock bumping, can damage a lock's internal components while leaving its outer casing undisturbed. And then there are other methods, such as burning the lock with acid, which will, quite obviously, destroy the lock.

In some instances, a new, stronger lock may be required. If the age or weakness of the lock allowed it to be broken or otherwise bypassed, an upgrade is sensible.

Dealing With Compromised Locks

Fortunately, the immediate required modifications aren't difficult. Any damaged door or window locks can be replaced on the spot, which will instantly re-secure that entry point. You don't even need to go to the expense of total replacement. A locksmith can rekey a lock, which changes the configuration of the lock pins located inside the device's tumbler. It essentially creates a new lock, and you'll be provided with a new key. This is an effective way to secure a lock whose reliability is in question.

When the break-in was successful, and/or when there are clear signs of tampering and damage with your locks, you may need some professional assistance from a locksmith to secure your home.
